The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) approved the export of 108,000 metric tonnes of sugar on Wednesday. The approved sugar belongs to the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP).
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb chaired the ECC meeting. The committee also approved international tenders for the sugar export.
The 108,000 tonnes form part of remaining stocks from government imports. Pakistan imported 300,000 tonnes of sugar during the previous year.
International Tender Process Approved
The government will conduct the export tender process under PPRA rules. Officials will follow the prescribed procurement procedures during the process.
The decision aims to facilitate the disposal of the remaining sugar stocks. It also allows authorities to proceed with international buyers through a transparent process.
The ECC reviewed the matter during its meeting on Wednesday. Senior government officials participated in discussions on the sugar export proposal.
Senior Officials Attend ECC Meeting
Federal Minister for National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain attended the meeting. Federal Minister for Investment Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh also participated in the proceedings.
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Haroon Akhtar Khan also joined the meeting. Other senior officials from relevant ministries and departments attended as well.
The ECCโs decision clears the way for the government to begin international tendering. Authorities will now proceed according to applicable procurement regulations.
The export involves a significant quantity of government-held sugar stocks. Therefore, the tender process will determine how the remaining inventory enters international markets.
Officials are expected to complete the required procedures before finalising the export arrangements. The government will monitor the process under existing procurement rules.
