Authorities Launch Emergency Response Following Deadly Incident
At least 82 people lost their lives after a coal mine explosion struck northern China, while rescue teams continued searching for missing workers following one of the country’s deadliest industrial accidents in recent months.
According to Chinese state media, the explosion occurred at the Liushenyu Coal Mine operated by the Tongzhou Group in Shanxi Province. Reports stated that the blast happened at approximately 7:29pm local time on Friday.
Officials said around 247 workers were on duty at the mine when the incident took place. Meanwhile, authorities confirmed that nine individuals remained missing as emergency teams continued operations at the site.
Rescue workers quickly reached the affected area and immediately launched search and recovery efforts. Authorities also mobilised emergency personnel and equipment to support operations as crews attempted to locate survivors and assist those affected.
Furthermore, officials continued assessing the extent of damage within the mine while maintaining safety measures around the surrounding area.
Leadership Calls for Investigation and Accountability Measures
Following the incident, Chinese President Xi Jinping instructed authorities to spare no effort in treating injured workers and intensify search efforts for those still unaccounted for.
Additionally, he directed government agencies to conduct a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the explosion and determine the factors that contributed to the tragedy.
Authorities also pledged to identify those responsible if negligence or safety failures played a role in the disaster.
Coal mining accidents have historically raised concerns regarding industrial safety standards and operational oversight in China.
Meanwhile, rescue teams remained at the site as investigations and emergency efforts continued throughout the affected area.
