Paris: CMA CGM confirmed that one of its container ships, the San Antonio, came under attack while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, leaving crew members injured and the vessel damaged.
Attack highlights growing risks to global shipping
The company said the incident occurred on Tuesday amid ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has already disrupted a critical maritime corridor. Moreover, the crisis has stalled hundreds of vessels and slowed nearly 20 percent of global oil trade. Consequently, shipping companies face increasing operational risks in the region.
French government spokesperson Maud Bregeon stated that France was not directly targeted in the attack. Meanwhile, Donald Trump announced a temporary pause in US escort operations in the strait, citing progress in negotiations with Iran.
CMA CGM added that injured crew members received evacuation and medical care. However, the company declined to provide further operational details.
Regional escalation and security concerns
Separately, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps carried out a drone strike targeting a Kurdish opposition-linked area in Iraqโs Kurdistan region. Although authorities reported no casualties, the incident added to regional tensions.
In addition, residents in southern Iranian cities reported explosions, which officials later attributed to air defense systems intercepting drones. Therefore, no damage or casualties occurred in those locations.
Overall, the attack on the vessel and related incidents underscore escalating instability in the region, raising concerns about maritime safety and the uninterrupted flow of global trade through one of the worldโs most vital shipping routes.
