Canada claimed their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory after defeating Qatar 6-0 in Vancouver on Thursday. The convincing win boosted their hopes of reaching the knockout stage. Meanwhile, Switzerland revived their campaign with a comfortable victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Canada ended a six-match losing streak at the World Cup dating back to 1986. The result also lifted Jesse Marsch’s side to the top of Group B on goal difference. Consequently, Canada now need only a draw against Switzerland to finish as group winners.
Jonathan David Stars in Dominant Victory
Jonathan David led Canada’s attack with a superb hat-trick against Qatar. Cyle Larin and Nathan Saliba also found the net during the one-sided contest. Additionally, Qatar defender Mohammad Manai scored an own goal to complete the rout.
However, the victory came at a cost after midfielder Ismael Kone suffered a serious leg injury. Qatar’s Assim Madibo received a red card following the dangerous challenge. Earlier, Homam El-Amin was also sent off, reducing Qatar to nine players.
Canada coach Jesse Marsch later confirmed Kone was taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg. He described the midfielder as an important figure within the squad. Therefore, the injury could prove a major setback for Canada’s campaign.
Canada Close in on Knockout Qualification
Canada capitalized on their numerical advantage by scoring three second-half goals. The impressive victory significantly improved their goal difference ahead of the final group match. Meanwhile, Switzerland remain level on four points after defeating Bosnia-Herzegovina.
The two sides will meet on June 24 in Vancouver. A draw will secure top spot in Group B for Canada because of their superior goal difference.
