KARACHI: Police have arrested Konain Shah, the prime suspect in assault and confinement of University of Karachi professor Dr Muhammad Arif Khan Saqi and his nephew.
Police identified the suspect as Syed Muhammad Konain Shah. He has been nominated in the case involving assault on the Professor and his detention.
Officials said police arrested Shah despite his interim bail because they feared he could flee the city. His arrest followed pressure from the Senate Standing Committee on Interior.
A Malir additional district and sessions court granted Shah interim pre-arrest bail on Thursday against surety bonds of Rs20,000.
The court also ordered him to join the investigation and summoned the investigating officer. It adjourned further proceedings on his bail application until September 21.
Details of the Incident
The case concerns an incident near Safoora Chowrangi involving a collision between a double-cabin vehicle and an online taxi carrying Dr Saqi and his nephew.
Police later established that the professor’s nephew, Waheedur Rehman, was driving the taxi during the incident.
Dr Saqi said the double-cabin vehicle was leaving a parking area when its guards signalled the taxi to stop. He said the vehicle then reversed and struck the taxi. The professor said he asked the occupants to compensate the taxi driver for the damage.
According to Dr Saqi, the hotel owner’s son then exited the vehicle, fired two shots and struck him with a pistol before firing into the air.
He alleged that the attackers took him and his nephew to a hotel, where they subjected them to torture.
Videos of the incident later circulated on social media, showing Dr Saqi being assaulted.
Police registered a case at Sachal police station against Shah and others under charges including attempted murder, assault, causing injuries and wrongful confinement.
Police also detained three hotel employees and continued efforts to arrest other suspects allegedly involved in the incident.
