Cambridge International Education has officially cancelled the AS Level Mathematics paper (9709/12) after confirming a major security breach involving the leaked question paper.
The decision comes one week after the exam body acknowledged that the paper had been shared before the scheduled examination. The incident raised serious concerns about examination security during the ongoing May–June session in multiple regions, including Pakistan.
Cambridge stated that the extent of the leak made it impossible to use the paper for calculating final grades.
Exam Paper Leak Forces Full Cancellation and Investigation
According to Cambridge International Education, the AS Level Mathematics paper was circulated online hours before the scheduled exam date.
The organisation said the breach violated strict examination regulations and compromised the integrity of the assessment process.
After conducting a detailed internal review, Cambridge confirmed that the leaked material was too widely distributed to be ignored or reused.
Officials stated that the compromised paper cannot be used under any circumstances to generate final results for students.
The examination board also confirmed that the theft and unauthorised sharing of confidential exam content is currently under active investigation.
Cambridge is working closely with law enforcement agencies and other partners to identify those responsible for the leak.
The organisation warned that strict penalties will be imposed on anyone found guilty of sharing or misusing exam material.
These penalties may include permanent disqualification from all Cambridge qualifications and future examination participation.
Replacement Exam Scheduled to Ensure Fair Student Assessment
To ensure fairness, Cambridge has decided to introduce a completely new version of the AS Level Mathematics paper (9709/12).
All candidates affected by the cancellation will be required to sit the replacement examination.
The new exam is scheduled for Tuesday, 9 June 2026, as part of the official June examination series timetable.
Cambridge officials said the decision was necessary to maintain trust in international academic standards and ensure equal opportunities for all students.
The organisation emphasised that the replacement paper will be carefully designed to match the original syllabus and difficulty level.
Officials also confirmed that students and schools will not be charged any additional fees for the rescheduled examination.
The AS and A Level results release date, set for 11 August 2026, will remain unchanged despite the cancellation.
Cambridge added that detailed instructions will be shared with schools and students by 15 May 2026.
These instructions will include guidelines on handling the replacement exam, exam procedures, and updated timetables.
The organisation will also provide information on withdrawals for the June 2026 session and registration guidance for the November 2026 exam series.
Stronger Security Measures Expected After Exam Leak Incident
The incident has highlighted growing concerns over digital exam security and paper handling procedures in international education systems.
Cambridge International Education said it is committed to strengthening its security protocols to prevent similar breaches in the future.
Education experts believe the leak could lead to stricter monitoring systems and tighter controls on exam distribution worldwide.
The organisation stressed that maintaining trust in global qualifications is a top priority, especially as millions of students depend on Cambridge assessments for higher education opportunities.
Schools and students affected by the disruption have been advised to stay updated through official communication channels.
The cancellation marks one of the most significant exam security incidents in recent years for Cambridge’s international examination system.
