A Lahore court has granted police six-day physical remand of two suspects arrested in connection with the alleged gang-rape of an Azeri woman.
The 20-year-old Azerbaijan national had travelled to Pakistan for business purposes. She was allegedly assaulted by three men at a rented flat near Raiwind during the night between Friday and Saturday.
Police arrested one prime suspect on Monday, while the arrest of another suspect emerged on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Lahore Deputy Inspector General (Investigation) Zeeshan Raza said police had identified the third suspect.
Police teams are now conducting raids to trace the remaining suspect as the investigation continues.
Court Grants Six-Day Physical Remand
Police presented the two arrested suspects before Magistrate Azhar Mahmood at the Cantonment Courts on Tuesday.
The investigating officer requested 14 days of physical remand for interrogation, evidence collection and DNA examination. However, the magistrate approved six days of physical remand for the suspects.
The development came a day after the woman recorded her statement before Judicial Magistrate Muhammad Sagheer under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
Police Continue Search for Third Suspect
The case was initially registered against three unidentified suspects following the woman’s complaint. Police have since identified all three suspects and arrested two of them.
Earlier, police also requested federal authorities to place the names of the three prime suspects on the Provisional National Identification List.
Police said the suspects had left Lahore shortly after the alleged assault. Authorities also took two close relatives and a domestic servant of one suspect into custody during the investigation.
In addition, police seized the vehicle allegedly used in the incident. The investigation is continuing as authorities work to trace the remaining suspect.
Previous Case Involving Foreign Women
The latest case is reportedly the second involving foreign women in the Defence C police station area within four months.
In June, two foreign women, nationals of the Netherlands and Venezuela, were allegedly abducted and sexually assaulted in the same police station area.
According to the FIR, five suspects allegedly abducted the women and demanded ransom. The suspects also allegedly subjected the women to sexual assault during their captivity.
The latest investigation remains ongoing, while the two arrested suspects will remain in police custody under the court-approved physical remand.
