Pakistan’s military leadership paid tribute to Captain Karnal Sher Khan Shaheed on his 27th martyrdom anniversary. They praised his courage, devotion, and ultimate sacrifice in defending the country. The military’s media wing issued the statement on Sunday.
Military Leadership Pays Glowing Tribute
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations, Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir led the tributes. Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf and Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu also honored the fallen officer. The armed forces remembered his bravery during the 1999 Kargil conflict.
Captain Karnal Sher Khan embraced martyrdom on July 5, 1999, while fighting Indian forces in Kargil’s snow-covered mountains. The ISPR said he displayed extraordinary gallantry despite overwhelming challenges. Moreover, it praised his leadership and commitment to protecting the motherland.
The statement described his sacrifice as a lasting symbol of courage and patriotism. It added that his legacy continues inspiring generations of Pakistanis. Furthermore, the armed forces reaffirmed their commitment to uphold the ideals for which he sacrificed his life.
Swabi Commemorates Hero of Kargil
Meanwhile, residents observed the anniversary with special ceremonies in Swabi. People from different walks of life visited his mausoleum to offer prayers. The Pakistan Army also organized a commemorative ceremony at the site.
Inspector General Frontier Corps Khyber Pakhtunkhwa North Major General Rao Imran Sarta attended the ceremony as chief guest. A Pakistan Army contingent presented a salute to the martyr. Additionally, the chief guest laid a floral wreath at his grave.
Born on January 1, 1970, Captain Karnal Sher Khan first joined the Pakistan Air Force. Later, he received a commission in the Pakistan Army. He fought at 17,000 feet in the Gultary sector along the Line of Control until his martyrdom.
His nephew, Numan Sher, recalled the family’s pride after receiving the news. He also shared his grandfather’s unwavering commitment to national service. Moreover, a retired army officer remembered Khan predicting he would return wrapped in Pakistan’s flag.
