QUETTA: Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti and Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi on Tuesday inaugurated the Jinnah Peoples Metro Train Service in Quetta, introducing a new public transport facility for residents.
The provincial government announced free travel for senior citizens and persons with disabilities, while other passengers will benefit from subsidised fares.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Parliamentary Secretary for Transport Mir Liaquat Ali Lehri, provincial ministers, lawmakers, Pakistan Railways officials, Chief Secretary Shakil Qadir Khan and other senior officials.
Speaking at the event, Bugti described the service as Balochistan’s first metro train project of its kind. He said it would provide safer, more comfortable and affordable transportation for students, workers, professionals and other citizens.
Bugti said the government planned to increase the service to two trains, enabling operations in both directions. Work has also started on extending the railway track towards Bostan Industrial Estate.
The provincial government is considering further extensions towards Pishin, Bostan and Mastung, according to the chief minister.
Bugti said the original plan involved importing engines and coaches from China at an estimated cost of Rs50 billion to Rs60 billion, with completion expected within three to four years.
However, following a proposal from Hanif Abbasi, authorities decided to manufacture the engines and coaches through Pakistan Railways.
Bugti said the revised approach would save time and resources while utilising the existing capabilities of Pakistan’s national railway system.
