Rights Group Raises Concerns Over Digital Restrictions and Surveillance
Amnesty International has accused Iranian authorities of using wartime conditions as a justification to expand restrictions on civil liberties, increase surveillance and suppress dissent across the country.
According to a report reviewed by the organization, members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) allegedly sent warning messages to citizens accused of bypassing internet restrictions through VPNs, satellite internet services and other tools. The messages reportedly warned recipients that such activities could lead to prosecution under national security and espionage-related laws.
Furthermore, Amnesty said the warnings included references to users’ IP addresses and online activity. Authorities allegedly threatened to suspend mobile services, block SIM cards and refer individuals to judicial authorities if they continued circumventing internet controls.
The report also claimed that several citizens received warnings stating that sharing images of sites damaged during military strikes or providing information to foreign media could be considered collaboration with hostile actors and result in legal action.
These allegations emerged shortly after Iran eased a prolonged internet blackout, although rights organizations maintain that significant online restrictions remain in place.
Arrests, Property Seizures and Legal Actions Draw International Concern
In addition to concerns about digital freedoms, Amnesty International alleged that Iranian authorities carried out thousands of arrests under the banner of national security during recent months.
According to official statements cited in the report, more than 6,500 individuals accused of espionage or anti-state activities have reportedly been detained since late February. Human rights advocates claim that journalists, lawyers, activists and members of minority communities have been disproportionately affected.
The report further alleged that authorities intensified legal actions against defense lawyers and human rights advocates who publicly questioned judicial procedures in politically sensitive cases.
Meanwhile, Amnesty expressed concern over reports of enforced disappearances, detention-related abuses and the increasing use of capital punishment in security-related cases. The organization also claimed that authorities seized the property of hundreds of individuals under measures linked to national security investigations.
Iranian officials have consistently defended security measures as necessary for protecting national stability and public safety during a period of heightened regional tensions.
Amnesty International has called for increased international attention to the situation, urging global institutions and governments to monitor developments closely and support efforts aimed at protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms in Iran.
