Passengers safely evacuated after aircraft comes to rest on grassy area beside taxiway
An Air Canada Boeing 737 MAX 8 veered off the taxiway after landing at Montreal-Trudeau International Airport on Thursday, coming to a stop on a grassy area. The incident prompted an immediate response from airport authorities, although no injuries were reported among passengers or crew.
According to flight tracking data, Flight AC774 arrived from Los Angeles and landed on Runway 06L at approximately 4 p.m. local time. After touchdown, the aircraft exited the runway via Taxiway B3. However, while travelling at an estimated ground speed of 55 knots, it failed to make the required turn onto Taxiway B and continued onto the grass before coming to a complete stop.
Passengers transferred safely
Air Canada confirmed the aircraft left the paved taxiway shortly after landing. The airline said airport emergency procedures were activated immediately, while ground personnel secured the aircraft and assessed the situation.
Meanwhile, all passengers and crew safely disembarked the aircraft without incident. Airport buses transported everyone to the terminal, and by 7:45 p.m. local time, Air Canada confirmed the evacuation process had been completed successfully.
The airline did not report any injuries, and officials have not indicated any structural damage to the aircraft.
Investigation underway
Authorities are expected to examine the circumstances that caused the aircraft to leave the taxiway. Aviation investigators will review flight data, airport conditions and operational procedures to determine the factors behind the incident.
Although the aircraft briefly disrupted ground operations in the affected area, airport authorities worked to restore normal traffic as recovery efforts continued. Air Canada said it is cooperating fully with the relevant aviation authorities during the investigation.
The incident serves as another reminder of the importance of strict ground movement procedures at busy international airports. Officials are expected to release additional information once the investigation progresses and a preliminary assessment becomes available.
