Noreen Niazi, the sister of former prime minister Imran Khan, was allowed to enter Rawalpindiโs Adiala Jail on Tuesday. Her visit came after the Supreme Court ordered that Khan should be allowed weekly meetings with his family.
Noreen Niazi Allowed Entry Into Adiala Jail
Niazi and Khanโs other sisters had initially been stopped at a security checkpoint near an intersection on Adiala Road.
However, authorities later allowed Niazi to proceed to the prison, where she was permitted to meet her brother. The development came after months of restrictions on Khanโs meetings with family members, lawyers and other associates.
The Islamabad High Court had previously allowed the former premier to meet visitors twice a week, specifically on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Despite that order, Khan had remained restricted from meeting visitors for several months.
Supreme Court Orders Weekly Family Meetings
The Supreme Court recently directed that Khan should be allowed weekly meetings with his family.
Tuesdayโs visit by Niazi came after the court issued the direction concerning his access to family members.
Khan has remained imprisoned since August 5, 2023, after his conviction in the Toshakhana case concerning the disclosure of details about state gifts.
He is currently serving a 14-year sentence in the ยฃ190 million corruption case, also known as the Al-Qadir Trust case.
Sisters Initially Stopped Near Adiala Road
Niaziโs arrival at Adiala Jail followed an initial security-related stoppage involving her and Khanโs other sisters.
The sisters were stopped at a security checkpoint and road intersection located along Adiala Road before Niazi was eventually allowed to enter.
Her subsequent entry allowed her to meet Khan inside the prison after the recent court direction.
The development has drawn attention because Khanโs family meetings had faced restrictions despite an earlier Islamabad High Court order.
For now, the Supreme Courtโs direction provides for weekly family meetings, giving Khanโs relatives a formal opportunity to meet him during his imprisonment.
