A powerful weather system enters the country today to launch a prolonged downpour across multiple provinces. The National Disaster Management Authority issued urgent warnings regarding potential flash floods, severe urban flooding, and devastating landslides in vulnerable hilly areas. This aggressive storm front will actively disrupt daily life from Monday, July 6, until July 10, completely breaking the intense summer heatwave.
The intense weather system targets northern and central regions first. Heavy thunderstorms and rainfall will immediately impact Islamabad, the Potohar Plateau, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and northeastern Punjab. Downpours already hit major cities like Lahore, Faisalabad, and Kasur today, dropping temperatures significantly. Meanwhile, Karachi expects persistent humidity and light drizzle under heavy cloud cover.
Monsoon currents will rapidly intensify on July 7 across the upper catchment areas of major rivers. Heavy downpours will feed the Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab rivers, raising water levels at the Tarbela and Mangla dams. While authorities do not predict massive river overflows, they explicitly warn that seasonal streams and hill torrents face sudden, violent surges. These flash floods threaten to inundate low-lying urban areas and trigger dangerous landslides in mountainous terrains.
Disaster management officials instructed all municipal departments to remain on high alert throughout the week. Emergency teams are currently deploying rescue equipment to high-risk zones in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan. Authorities strongly urge citizens to monitor official weather advisories, avoid unnecessary travel near waterways, and strictly follow local evacuation guidelines to ensure public safety during this severe weather event.
