ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court today ordered the release of two senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leaders _ Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Sheharyar Afridi.

The court declared the illegal arrest of Qureshi and Afridi under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) and ordered their release.

IHC Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb issued the order on Thursday while hearing petitions wherein the lawyers for Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Sheharyar Afridi challenged their arrest. 

The court, however, directed the PTI leaders to submit an undertaking similar to the one given by former state minister Ali Muhammad Khan.

Islamabad police arrested PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Sheharyar Afridi soon after the arrest of Imran Khan on May 9.

Violence triggered by the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan influenced police to arrest senior PTI leaders under the MPO.

On Wednesday, the court ordered the release of Maleeka Bokhari and Shirin Mazari after declaring their arrest unlawful under the 3MPO.

Police, nonetheless, re-arrested them soon after their release from Adiala Jail.

IHC bars the arrest of Imran Khan till May 31

The Islamabad High Court today barred the arrest of PTI chairman Imran Khan in any case till May 31, 2023. The court gave the order on a petition filed by a PTI lawyer on behalf of former prime minister Imran Khan.

On Wednesday, the additional attorney general for Pakistan, the advocate general, and the state counsel sought time from the court to provide details of cases against the PTI chief.

The court, however, adjourned the hearing till May 31 after announcing a blanket
protection for Imran Khan in multiple cases.

After the Supreme Court’s decision in favor of Imran Khan, the IHC

C has given bail to Imran Khan in dozens of cases.

Rangers personnel arrested Imran Khan on May 9 from the yard of the
Islamabad High Court in the Al-Qadir Trust case.

A day after, the three-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by chief
Justice Umar Ata Bandial declared the arrest of Khan illegal and set him free.
