United Nations nuclear chief arrives in pakistan today to inspect nuke facilities

ISLAMABAD: Director-General of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi is arriving in Pakistan for a 2-day visit to inspect sites employing nuclear technology.

The DG IAEA will meeting the government officials and visit different institutions using nuclear technology in the healthcare, agriculture, industry and power generation.

The Foreign Office said this in a statement issued a day ahead of the UN’s nuclear chief arrival in Islamabad.

The visit will give an opportunity to Pakistan and the IAEA to find ways for further promoting their ongoing cooperation for peaceful applications of nuclear technology for the socio-economic development in Pakistan.

Pakistan is a founding member of the IAEA since 1957 and enjoys mutually beneficial collaboration with the agency, the FO added.

Earlier, a group of UN Disarmament Fellows, consisting of officers from 24 countries, visited Pakistan last year from October 8 to 10.

Their visit was the part of their international study tour in collaboration with the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNoDA).

During the visit, they received a briefing on Pakistan’s perspective on arms control, disarmament, and nuclear non-proliferation.

They were also informed about unhindered access to dual-use technologies for peaceful socio-economic applications.

The group consisted of officers from 24 countries _ such as Algeria, Angola, Antigua & Barbuda, Argentina, Cambodia, Egypt, France, Ghana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Hungary, Iran, Libya, Montenegro, Pakistan, Palau, Poland, Saint Kits & Nevis, Togo, United States, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Yemen.
