Debutants Hold European Champions in Atlanta
World Cup debutants Cape Verde produced a major surprise on Monday by holding European champions Spain to a 0-0 draw in their Group H opener.
The match was played at Atlanta Stadium, where Spain entered as heavy favourites.
Luis de la Fuente’s side was widely expected to start the tournament with a comfortable win. Spain had the stronger squad, greater experience and full control of possession.
However, Cape Verde delivered a disciplined defensive performance and refused to be broken down.
The Blue Sharks, playing their first-ever World Cup match, defended with courage and organisation. Their players stayed compact, blocked passing lanes and frustrated Spain throughout the contest.
Spain Dominate Possession But Fail to Score
Spain controlled 74 percent of possession and spent long periods attacking Cape Verde’s goal.
The 2010 world champions created pressure from wide areas and through midfield, but their finishing lacked sharpness.
Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha and his defence stood firm under constant pressure.
Spain tried to increase the tempo in the second half. Barcelona star Lamine Yamal was also brought off the bench in an attempt to change the game.
But even his introduction could not produce the breakthrough Spain needed.
Cape Verde continued to defend deep and relied on concentration, physical commitment and quick clearances.
The result will be seen as a missed opportunity for Spain, who are among the leading contenders for the title.
Cape Verde Celebrate Historic First Point
For Cape Verde, the final whistle sparked emotional celebrations.
Players and supporters celebrated wildly after securing a historic point in their first World Cup appearance.
The island nation has a population of around 525,000 and had never qualified for the tournament before.
Cape Verde’s place in the finals came after FIFA expanded the World Cup to 48 teams.
Despite being ranked as huge outsiders by betting markets, the team showed that it could compete on football’s biggest stage.
The draw gives Cape Verde a dream start and adds early drama to Group H.
Spain will now face pressure to respond strongly in their next match, while Cape Verde will take confidence from one of the biggest results in their football history.
