ZEE5 has removed the controversial biographical film *Satluj* from its Indian platform just 48 hours after its digital premiere. The sudden decision has triggered political debate, criticism, and concerns over creative freedom in India.
The film, previously titled *Punjab 95*, premiered on July 3 without theatrical release. It featured actor Diljit Dosanjh as late Sikh human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. However, Indian subscribers found the title unavailable on July 5, while it reportedly remained accessible in selected international markets.
## Film faced years of censorship challenges
Directed by Honey Trehan and co-starring Arjun Rampal, *Satluj* tells the story of Khalra’s investigation into alleged extrajudicial killings and illegal mass cremations during Punjab’s insurgency in the 1990s. Khalra was later abducted and killed in 1995.
The project remained under review by India’s censor authorities for nearly four years. Reports said officials sought more than 120 changes before approving the film. They allegedly asked the filmmakers to change the title, remove references to the Punjab Police, delete geographical locations, and reduce scenes depicting violence and torture. The filmmakers declined to implement the requested edits.
## Removal sparks debate over artistic freedom
ZEE5 said it removed the film because of “current developments.” Nevertheless, the streaming platform stated it supports the filmmakers’ creative vision and hopes to restore the film in India after completing the required process.
Meanwhile, the removal has renewed debate over censorship and artistic freedom. Supporters argue the decision limits independent storytelling, whereas critics believe politically sensitive historical subjects continue to face significant restrictions in India’s entertainment industry.
