Apple has launched the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max with major upgrades across cameras, performance, battery life and artificial intelligence.
Both models feature a new variable-aperture main camera, Apple’s A20 Pro chip and a redesigned Dynamic Island. They also introduce Apple’s C2 cellular modem and N1 wireless networking chip.
The phones run iOS 27 and bring a new Siri experience powered by Apple Intelligence. Apple has also introduced new Apple Watches and its first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo.
Design and Display
The iPhone 18 Pro features a 6.3-inch display, while the Pro Max offers a 6.9-inch panel. Both use Super Retina XDR OLED technology with ProMotion and adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz.
Apple has redesigned the Dynamic Island to occupy less space. It can now display up to three Live Activities simultaneously.
Face ID remains integrated for authentication and device unlocking. The phones come in black, silver, glacier and the new burgundy finish.
Apple has also added a new vapor chamber for improved thermal management. The system has three times more surface area than the iPhone 17 Pro.
According to Apple, this design can improve sustained performance by up to 40 percent.
A20 Pro Chip and Connectivity
Both models are powered by the new A20 Pro chip. The processor uses a 2-nanometer manufacturing process and features a six-core CPU and seven-core GPU.
It also includes a dual 16-core Neural Engine for AI processing. Apple says the chip offers 50 percent more memory bandwidth than the A19 Pro.
The GPU delivers up to 40 percent higher performance, while the Neural Engine provides twice the AI processing power.
The N1 wireless chip supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. Meanwhile, Apple’s C2 modem delivers faster uploads while using 15 percent less energy than the C1X.
The C2 modem also supports mmWave connectivity in the United States.
New Apple Intelligence Features
The iPhone 18 Pro series introduces the next generation of Apple Intelligence alongside a new Siri AI experience.
Siri AI arrives as a beta feature with iOS 27. It can use information from messages, emails and photos to provide more relevant responses.
The assistant can also understand content displayed on the screen and take actions based on it.
A new Siri mode in the Camera app can identify objects and scenes in front of the camera.
Apple has also introduced new image-editing tools. Spatial Reframing and Extend allow users to change image composition.
An upgraded Clean Up tool can remove unwanted elements from photographs. Image Playground can now generate photorealistic images.
Safari also gains a Notify Me feature for tracking changes to webpages.
Apple says its AI system combines on-device processing with Private Cloud Compute.
Variable Aperture Camera Leads the Upgrade
The biggest camera change comes with the new 48MP Fusion Main camera. For the first time, an iPhone main camera features a variable aperture.
The lens uses six laser-cut blades that adjust the aperture according to lighting and depth-of-field needs.
It can automatically open to ƒ/1.48 for low-light photography and use ƒ/1.8 for portraits. It can also narrow to ƒ/4 to keep more subjects in focus.
Users can manually select from four aperture settings.
Apple has introduced a new computational photography system for the main camera. The company says it improves detail and image quality in low-light conditions and group photographs.
The Camera app also receives Pro controls for aperture, shutter speed and white balance. Users can additionally view a histogram to monitor exposure.
Photographic Styles now includes texture and grain controls for greater creative flexibility.
New Video and Editing Tools
Apple has expanded video capabilities on the iPhone 18 Pro models.
Cinematic effects can now be applied after recording videos at up to 60 frames per second. Time-lapse recording supports 4K resolution and Dolby Vision HDR.
Apple has also upgraded Audio Mix with algorithms designed to improve voice quality and separate voices from music.
Another new feature is Apple Reference Image. The system creates an unalterable reference image using signed sensor data captured when a photograph is taken.
Users can compare the reference with an edited photograph in the Photos app. This can help identify whether changes were made.
Battery Life and Pricing
Battery performance has also received a major upgrade. Apple says eSIM-only versions offer up to 36 hours of video playback on the iPhone 18 Pro.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max can provide up to 45 hours of video playback.
The iPhone 18 Pro can reach 50 percent charge in around 15 minutes using wired charging. Wireless charging can reach 50 percent in approximately 30 minutes.
The Pro Max can reportedly deliver around seven hours of video playback after five minutes of wired charging.
Apple’s new battery usage model also indicates up to 30 hours of usage on a full charge.
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 with 256GB of storage. Meanwhile, the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299 with 256GB.
Both models are available with 512GB, 1TB and 2TB storage options.
The starting price represents a $100 increase for both models compared with the previous generation.
