KARACHI: Madhubala, a female elephant at Karachi Safari Park, has suddenly fallen ill after developing swelling in her right hind thigh.
The condition has left the elephant unable to use her right hind leg, according to the Safari Park administration. Madhubala reportedly fell to the ground on Tuesday and was later helped back onto her feet with a crane.
Madhubala Receives Medical Treatment
The Safari Park administration said medical tests have been conducted to assess Madhubala’s condition.
A veterinary expert said she is receiving medicines, including antibiotics, due to concerns about a possible bacterial infection.
However, the expert said further examination is needed to determine the exact cause of her illness.
The veterinarian also noted that prolonged exposure to hard flooring can contribute to foot problems in elephants.
Madhubala previously suffered from infections and abscesses affecting her feet.
The administration also said she had recently experienced calcium deficiency. However, her calcium levels have since improved.
Madhubala’s Transfer to Safari Park
Madhubala was transferred from Karachi Zoo to Karachi Safari Park in November 2024.
She had previously been the lone elephant at Karachi Zoo.
At Safari Park, she was kept alongside two other elephants, Sonia and Malika.
However, Sonia died around a month after Madhubala’s transfer.
The latest health issue has renewed attention on Madhubala’s condition and the medical care provided to elephants at the facility.
KMC Unaware of Current Health Condition
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) said they were unaware of Madhubala’s current health condition.
Officials and veterinary staff are continuing to monitor the elephant as further medical examinations are carried out.
The results of those examinations are expected to provide more clarity about the cause of the swelling and her inability to use the affected leg.
