Pakistani filmmaker Wajahat Rauf has addressed the long-running claim that he introduced Mahira Khan to the entertainment industry. He said social media misrepresented his original comments and created a false narrative.
The director explained that he never claimed to have discovered the superstar. Instead, he said he worked with her during the early stage of her career.
Wajahat Rauf Responds to Viral Claim
During a recent podcast appearance, the host asked Wajahat Rauf about reports suggesting he had claimed to discover Mahira Khan.
The director strongly rejected the allegation and explained how the misunderstanding began.
He said, “This is the way social media works. I had said in an interview that I worked with Mahira during the early stages of her career and hired her. I never once said that I discovered her or brought her into the industry.”
Director Blames Misleading Headlines
Wajahat said a podcast later published a headline that incorrectly claimed he had discovered Mahira Khan.
He explained that he immediately responded after seeing the post online.
According to the director, “The podcast ran a headline saying that Wajahat Rauf discovered Mahira Khan. I immediately picked up my phone, commented on it, and told them they had reported it incorrectly.”
He added that misleading headlines often spread quickly on social media and create unnecessary confusion.
Mahira Khan and Wajahat Rauf Laughed Over the Rumour
The filmmaker also shared that he and Mahira Khan continue to enjoy a friendly relationship.
He revealed that both of them laughed about the misunderstanding.
Wajahat explained, “Mahira and I have stayed in touch since those days, and we even laughed about it. I commented under the post that she was actually Ghazanfar Ali’s discovery. I first saw her at his launch event and was impressed by her energy. That’s when I thought we might work together someday and eventually we did.”
Director Criticizes Social Media Culture
Wajahat Rauf also criticized the growing trend of taking public figures’ comments out of context.
He said his original statement was straightforward, but social media users and content creators distorted it to generate viral headlines.
The director’s clarification has renewed discussion about how misleading titles and edited clips can spread misinformation, especially when they involve well-known celebrities.
