India’s Virat Kohli crossed 15,000 one-day international runs on Sunday, becoming only the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to reach the milestone.
The 37-year-old achieved the landmark with a boundary during India’s opening ODI against the West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram. Kohli reached the mark in his 303rd ODI innings, doing so 74 innings earlier than Tendulkar.
Kohli Reaches Historic ODI Milestone
Tendulkar reached 15,000 ODI runs in 377 innings and finished his career with 18,426 runs. Meanwhile, retired Sri Lankan great Kumar Sangakkara ranks third among the format’s leading run-scorers with 14,234 runs.
Kohli’s latest achievement adds another milestone to his decorated ODI career. The right-handed batter now plays only the 50-over format after retiring from Test cricket and T20 internationals.
The Indian star has also confirmed his plans for the next World Cup. Speaking to broadcasters JioStar on Saturday, Kohli said the 2027 ODI World Cup would be his final appearance in the tournament.
Kohli Set for Final World Cup
Kohli played a key role in India’s 2011 World Cup triumph under captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. He will now have another opportunity to represent India at the 2027 tournament before potentially ending his ODI career.
Kohli and Rohit Sharma, 39, both retired from T20 internationals after India won the 2024 T20 World Cup. The decision came a year after India suffered a defeat against Australia in the 2023 ODI World Cup final on home soil.
With his latest milestone, Kohli continues to strengthen his position among ODI cricket’s most prolific batters. His 15,000-run achievement also places him in an exclusive group alongside Tendulkar and Sangakkara.
