The US Supreme Court rejected Donald Trump’s bid to overturn a $5 million civil judgment. Consequently, the ruling in E. Jean Carroll’s sexual assault and defamation case remains in effect.
The court declined to hear Trump’s appeal on Monday. However, the justices provided no explanation for their decision.
The judgment stems from a federal civil trial held in Manhattan.
Court Rejects Trump’s Appeal
In May 2023, a jury found Trump liable for sexually assaulting E. Jean Carroll. The jury also held him liable for defaming the former newspaper columnist.
Carroll accused Trump of assaulting her inside a New York department store in 1996. She publicly revealed the allegation in a 2019 book.
Following the Supreme Court’s decision, Trump criticized the ruling on social media. He described the case as “fake” and vowed to continue fighting it.
Additionally, Trump said he would challenge what he called a “lawfare case” with all his power.
Carroll Welcomes Final Decision
Carroll’s attorney, Roberta Kaplan, welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision. She said the ruling confirmed the jury’s unanimous verdict.
Kaplan also stated that Trump’s repeated appeals had failed. Therefore, she said the decision ends his effort to avoid accountability.
The Supreme Court’s refusal to hear the appeal leaves the $5 million judgment intact. As a result, the civil verdict against Trump remains legally enforceable.
