Defense Secretary Emphasizes Military Preparedness
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Washington remains prepared to resume military operations against Iran if ongoing negotiations fail to produce an agreement.
Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on Saturday, Hegseth stressed that the United States maintains the capability to restart operations if circumstances require.
He stated that American military resources and stockpiles remain sufficient to support potential missions, adding that US forces are positioned to respond to developments in multiple regions.
Furthermore, Hegseth emphasized that the United States continues investing heavily in its defense industrial base to expand the production of munitions and strengthen military readiness.
Meanwhile, he rejected suggestions that Washingtonโs engagement in the Middle East has reduced its commitment to the Asia-Pacific region.
According to the defense secretary, the United States possesses the capacity to address security challenges in different parts of the world simultaneously.
His remarks came as diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran continued amid attempts to resolve outstanding disputes.
Negotiators Seek Breakthrough Amid Ongoing Talks
While highlighting military preparedness, Hegseth also underscored the administrationโs preference for a diplomatic solution.
He said US President Donald Trump remains committed to securing what he described as a strong agreement that would address concerns regarding Iranโs nuclear activities.
Additionally, Hegseth characterized Trump as patient during the negotiation process and expressed optimism about the possibility of reaching an acceptable outcome.
Meanwhile, discussions between American and Iranian negotiators continued as both sides worked to narrow differences that have complicated progress toward a broader settlement.
Reports indicate that the proposed framework could extend an existing truce for an additional 60 days, creating more time for negotiators to pursue a long-term agreement.
Furthermore, Trump is expected to review the latest proposal before making a final decision on whether to endorse the arrangement.
As talks continue, observers remain focused on whether diplomacy can overcome remaining obstacles and prevent a renewed escalation in regional tensions.
