Airport Operations Reduced as Military Aircraft Occupy Key Facilities
Israeli officials have warned that the continued presence of US military aircraft at Ben Gurion Airport has significantly disrupted civilian aviation operations, resulting in estimated losses of 700 million shekels ($248 million) over the past two months.
According to airport authorities, dozens of US military refuelling aircraft currently stationed at Israel’s main international airport have reduced available space and operational capacity. As a result, Ben Gurion Airport is functioning at only one-third of its normal capacity.
Sharon Kedmi, Director General of the Israel Airports Authority, said approximately 70 percent of airport activity has been restricted because military operations are occupying critical facilities and resources.
Furthermore, Kedmi warned that authorities have reached the limits of their operational capabilities and may announce additional flight cancellations in the coming days.
Officials also expressed concern that prolonged disruptions could lead to financial losses worth billions of shekels if current conditions continue.
Passenger Traffic and Airline Services Face Growing Pressure
Airport authorities had originally projected that around 18 million passengers would travel through Ben Gurion Airport this year. However, revised estimates now suggest total passenger numbers may fall to approximately 15 million.
Additionally, officials fear that nearly three million travelers could be affected by ongoing delays, reduced flight schedules, and cancellations.
The situation has also complicated efforts to restore normal international air travel. According to Israeli aviation officials, many foreign airlines remain reluctant to resume services while operational constraints persist.
Earlier this month, Civil Aviation Authority officials reportedly raised concerns that the growing military presence was severely limiting civilian flight activity and increasing travel costs.
Furthermore, aviation regulators warned that reduced airline competition could contribute to higher ticket prices for passengers and place additional pressure on local carriers.
Industry observers note that the airport plays a vital role in Israel’s transportation network, making continued disruptions a significant challenge for the aviation sector.
As military operations continue, airport authorities are monitoring the situation closely and assessing options to minimize the impact on travelers and commercial aviation services.
