Uruguay dominated possession but settled for a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabia in Group H after a tense World Cup clash in the sweltering heat of Miami on Monday. As a result, the outcome left the group wide open after the opening round of matches.
Earlier in the day, European champions Spain suffered a shock goalless draw against tournament debutants Cape Verde. Therefore, all four Group H teams now sit level on one point.
Saudi Arabia stunned Uruguay by taking the lead just before halftime. Defender Abdulelah Al-Amri reacted quickest after goalkeeper Fernando Muslera spilled a header from a corner. Consequently, the Saudis entered the break with a surprise advantage.
Uruguay struggled to create clear chances in the opening half despite controlling the ball. However, Marcelo Bielsa changed the game after the interval with two substitutions. Agustin Canobbio and Juan Manuel Sanabria added pace and urgency to the attack.
The South Americans dominated the second half and unleashed 22 shots. Nevertheless, Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais produced several key saves to frustrate Uruguay. Manuel Ugarte also struck the post with a powerful long-range effort on the hour mark.
Eventually, Uruguay found the equaliser with 10 minutes remaining. Al-Owais failed to hold a routine effort, and Maxi Araujo quickly converted the rebound to level the score.
Despite relentless pressure, Saudi Arabia defended bravely to secure a valuable point. Their disciplined backline withstood repeated attacks during the closing stages.
After the match, Bielsa admitted his disappointment with the result. He said Uruguay should have won but failed to produce their best performance until the second half. Meanwhile, Saudi coach Georgios Donis earned encouragement after his side extended their resilient display.
Uruguay will next face Cape Verde, while Saudi Arabia prepare for a crucial showdown against Spain.
