A forthcoming Bollywood film has drawn criticism from Kashmiris after its teaser allegedly mocked victims blinded by pellet shotguns. The controversy has reignited debate over the use of pellet guns in Indian-administered Kashmir.
The film, titled Chauhaan, is scheduled for release in October 2027. Critics argue its promotional material trivialises the suffering of hundreds of victims.
Victims Say Teaser Reopens Old Wounds
Feroz Aslam, 28, lost his eyesight after security forces fired pellet shotguns during a protest in Sopore a decade ago. He said the injuries permanently changed his life.
Aslam recalled that he was buying fruit when pellets struck him. He said seven pellets entered his right eye and six hit his left eye.
He added that more than 300 pellets struck his chest during the incident. The injuries left him permanently blind and dependent on his ageing parents.
Pellet shotguns release hundreds of small metal pellets that can penetrate skin and internal tissues. Doctors often struggle to remove the embedded pellets after such injuries.
Film Faces Backlash Before Release
According to rights groups, more than 1,000 Kashmiris have suffered partial or complete vision loss since pellet guns were introduced in 2010. Authorities adopted the weapons to control street protests in the disputed region.
The teaser for Chauhaan has triggered widespread criticism from victims and activists. They argue the film appears to make light of a painful chapter in Kashmir’s recent history.
Many victims say the promotional clips have revived traumatic memories. The filmmakers have yet to publicly respond to the criticism.
