Courteney Cox has revealed that a chance meeting at the Beverly Hills Hotel led to her return to feature film directing after more than a decade.
The Friends star is directing Evil Genius, a feature adaptation inspired by the notorious 2003 “pizza bomber” case.
The project marks Cox’s first feature directing assignment in 12 years.
Speaking at The Hollywood Reporter’s Studio at 1 Hotel during the Toronto International Film Festival, Cox explained how an informal conversation with filmmaker Barbara Schroeder eventually turned into a major Hollywood project.
Schroeder directed Netflix’s Evil Genius documentary series, which examined the extraordinary criminal case involving pizza delivery driver Brian Wells.
Cox said she had admired the documentary before becoming involved with the film adaptation.
Chance Beverly Hills Meeting Led to Directing Offer
Cox said the opportunity emerged while she was sitting at her favourite counter inside the Beverly Hills Hotel.
She noticed Schroeder and approached her to praise the documentary.
Cox told Schroeder that she loved Evil Genius and believed she had done an excellent job with the project.
The conversation quickly took an unexpected turn.
According to Cox, Schroeder told her that the feature project was available for a director and suggested that she pursue it.
The two already knew each other, which helped transform the casual encounter into a serious professional discussion.
Cox joked that the Beverly Hills Hotel had become an important location for some of her business dealings over the years.
She said she had made several deals there and humorously stressed that many of those conversations happened at the counter.
Cox also joked that she could not gain access to the hotel’s poker room.
What began as an informal conversation ultimately became one of the biggest directing commitments of her career.
‘Evil Genius’ Spent Eight Years in Development
Despite Cox’s immediate interest, the film did not move quickly into production.
She said Evil Genius spent approximately eight years in development before cameras finally started rolling.
The project faced several major industry disruptions during that period.
The COVID-19 pandemic delayed film and television production across Hollywood.
Later, the 2023 Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes created further uncertainty across the entertainment industry.
Those disruptions added years to an already lengthy development process.
However, Cox said she remained committed to the project.
She explained that she could not walk away from the story because of how strongly she connected with the material.
Production eventually moved forward in 2025.
The long development period makes the film a particularly significant project for Cox, who has been better known internationally for acting than directing.
Her return behind the camera also represents a major step in the next phase of her career.

Wells was a pizza delivery driver who became involved in a complex bank robbery plot in Erie, Pennsylvania.

The unusual circumstances surrounding his death led to years of investigation and intense public speculation.
