The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has opened registration for the Law Admission Test (LAT) 2026 for aspiring law students across Pakistan. Candidates can submit their applications until October 20, 2026. HEC has scheduled the test for November 15, 2026, according to the Education Testing Council (ETC) calendar.
Students seeking admission to four-year undergraduate LLB programs at HEC- and Pakistan Bar Council-recognised institutions must take the LAT.
Who Can Apply for LAT 2026?
Candidates with a Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) or equivalent qualification can apply. Students who have completed 12 years of education also meet the basic eligibility requirement. Moreover, candidates awaiting their final HSSC or equivalent results can register for the test.
Students who have already passed the LAT can also appear again. They may retake the test to improve their scores for merit-based admission.
LAT 2026 Test Pattern
The LAT carries 100 marks, while candidates need at least 50 marks to pass. The test includes an essay, personal statement and multiple-choice questions. Candidates can write both the essay and personal statement in English or Urdu.
The essay carries 15 marks, while the personal statement carries 10 marks. English and General Knowledge each carry 20 marks. Islamic Studies, Pakistan Studies and Urdu each carry 10 marks. Basic Mathematics carries five marks.
Candidates can write the essay and personal statement within a 200-word limit.
The English section covers areas such as synonyms, antonyms and prepositions. Meanwhile, the Urdu section tests vocabulary, while Mathematics focuses on basic concepts.
How to Register for LAT 2026
Candidates must complete their applications through the HEC Education Testing Council portal. Applicants should complete their profiles and registration details before submitting the form. HEC will not consider applications that remain saved or incomplete.
Candidates should also check their personal details carefully before submission. These include their name, CNIC number, mobile number and other information.
Applicants must use their own CNIC and personal details during registration.
Roll Number Slips and Test Centres
HEC will provide roll number slips through the ETC portal. Candidates will also receive test information through their registered email addresses and mobile numbers. Applicants should provide an active email address and phone number during registration.
On test day, candidates must carry a printed roll number slip and original CNIC or passport.
Candidates below 18 must bring their original B-Form or NADRA Juvenile Card. They should also carry their original SSC or HSSC certificate with a photograph.
HEC will conduct the LAT in major cities across Pakistan. Candidates can select their preferred test centre during registration.
However, they cannot change the centre after submitting their application. HEC may assign candidates to another city if fewer than 250 applicants select a particular location.
Important LAT Instructions
Candidates cannot bring mobile phones or electronic devices into the test centre. The restriction also covers calculators, recording devices, communication equipment and imaging devices. In addition, candidates cannot photograph, upload or share question papers or answer sheets.
The HEC Education Testing Council conducts the LAT several times each year. The latest schedule lists November 15 as the final LAT date for 2026, with results scheduled for December 24.
