Co-Hosts Secure Last 32 Spot With Match to Spare
The United States booked their place in the World Cup knockout stage after a comfortable 2-0 victory over Australia in Group D.
The co-hosts delivered another impressive performance despite missing star player Christian Pulisic. The win moved the United States to six points and guaranteed qualification for the last 32 with one group match still to play.
An early own goal from Australian defender Cameron Burgess gave the Americans the perfect start. Alex Freeman then doubled the lead shortly before halftime with his first World Cup goal.
The result places the United States in a strong position to finish top of the group. They will secure first place if Turkey fail to defeat Paraguay.
Freeman Shines as US Show Squad Depth
The United States began the match with confidence and quickly established control.
Their opening goal arrived in the 11th minute when Folarin Balogun made a strong run down the left side. His cross was intended for Ricardo Pepi, but Burgess accidentally diverted the ball into his own net.
The Americans continued to dominate possession and create chances. Australia struggled to move out of their own half during most of the first period.
The second goal arrived in the 43rd minute. A blocked effort from Sergino Dest looped into the air inside the penalty area. Freeman reacted first and headed into an open net.
Initially ruled offside, the goal was later awarded after a VAR review.
Freeman described the moment as emotional and said scoring at the World Cup was a dream come true.
Australia Face Tough Qualification Challenge
Australia attempted to respond after the break. Coach Tony Popovic introduced attacking players Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe at halftime in an effort to change the match.
The substitutions improved Australia’s performance, but clear scoring chances remained limited.
The second half lacked quality and became increasingly physical. Harry Souttar missed Australia’s best opportunity late in the game when he failed to convert from close range.
Popovic admitted his team looked sluggish during the opening half and paid a heavy price for the slow start.
The United States will now face Turkey in Los Angeles. Mauricio Pochettino hopes Christian Pulisic will return for that match.
Australia remain on three points and must now defeat Paraguay in their final group game to keep their World Cup journey alive.
