Leaders discuss trade, regional security and efforts to advance peace initiatives
KYIV: Türkiye and Ukraine have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their strategic partnership despite the ongoing war, with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan describing his visit to Kyiv as highly productive and focused on expanding bilateral cooperation.
In a statement released on Friday, Fidan said he held comprehensive meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and Head of the Presidential Office Andriy Yermak. The discussions covered developments in the Russia-Ukraine war, economic cooperation and regional security.
Fidan welcomed Ukraine’s parliamentary approval of the Türkiye-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement before his visit, describing the move as a significant step toward deepening commercial ties and creating new opportunities for businesses in both countries.
Türkiye reiterates support for peace efforts
Meanwhile, the Turkish foreign minister reaffirmed Ankara’s support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also reiterated Türkiye’s readiness to support diplomatic initiatives aimed at bringing Russia and Ukraine back to negotiations.
According to Fidan, Türkiye remains committed to backing every effort that could contribute to a lasting and peaceful resolution of the conflict while maintaining dialogue with all relevant parties.
Crimean Tatar issues also discussed
During the visit, Fidan also met Crimean Tatar national leader Mustafa Abdulcemil Kirimoglu and Crimean Tatar Mejlis Chairman Refat Chubarov. The discussions focused on the rights and welfare of the Crimean Tatar community and the preservation of its cultural identity.
Additionally, Fidan expressed appreciation after receiving a Ukrainian state decoration from President Zelenskyy, describing the honour as a reflection of the strong friendship between the two countries.
He said Türkiye would continue working to strengthen its longstanding partnership with Ukraine based on mutual trust, shared interests and the vision of both countries’ leaders. The visit highlighted continued cooperation in trade, diplomacy and regional stability despite the challenges created by the ongoing conflict.
