US President Donald Trump has indicated that reaching an agreement with Iran is not his preferred option, despite ongoing negotiations aimed at ending the conflict.
Speaking at a campaign rally in San Antonio, Texas, Trump praised his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, for his role in diplomatic efforts. He said Witkoff was making progress in negotiations and described him as an effective negotiator, citing his involvement in securing a ceasefire agreement in Gaza.
However, Trump suggested that Washington could achieve its objectives without necessarily signing a deal with Tehran. He claimed Iran was prepared to offer substantial concessions to end the conflict.
“They will never have a nuclear weapon,” Trump told supporters, reiterating his administration’s position on Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
The US president also expressed confidence that the war would conclude soon, although he did not provide a specific timeline or explain what conditions would lead to an end to hostilities.
His remarks came amid reports that the White House had asked the Pentagon to prepare options for potential strikes against Iranian targets before the November 3 US midterm elections.
The conflict began on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched attacks against Iran. Tehran subsequently responded with missile and drone strikes across the region, while disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz raised concerns about global energy supplies.
Diplomatic efforts involving Pakistan and Qatar have sought to reduce tensions, but disagreements over security, maritime navigation and Iran’s nuclear programme continue to complicate negotiations.
