US President Donald Trump has said Washington may join Saudi Arabia’s military strikes against Yemen’s Houthis following an attack on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport that killed at least 12 people and injured 309 others.
Speaking to reporters outside the White House, Trump said the administration was assessing the situation before making a decision. He added that officials had only recently learned about the latest attack and would decide quickly whether to participate in further military action.
Riyadh Airport Attack Leaves Hundreds Injured
Saudi authorities blamed the Houthis for Saturday’s attack, which marked the third strike on King Khalid International Airport in a single week. The casualties included four Saudi citizens, two Bangladeshis and nationals from the United States, Jordan, Palestine, Syria, Sudan and Egypt.
According to Saudi civil aviation officials, 309 people sustained injuries, including several who remained in critical condition. The attack overwhelmed hospitals as ambulances and helicopters transported injured people for treatment.
Moreover, the strike disrupted air travel to the Saudi capital, forcing airlines to cancel or divert flights. The US Embassy in Riyadh urged American citizens to avoid the airport and surrounding areas following the incident.
Saudi-Led Coalition Vows Retaliation
The Saudi-led military coalition pledged a decisive response against the Houthis, describing the airport attack as a serious violation of international law. Meanwhile, the latest violence has raised concerns about the vulnerability of Saudi Arabia’s air defences and the possibility of a wider regional conflict.
The attacks come as Saudi Arabia supports an offensive by Yemen’s internationally recognised government against Houthi forces. The renewed fighting has intensified following the collapse of a relative calm that had prevailed since a 2022 agreement helped reduce hostilities.
Trump’s remarks signal that the United States could expand its involvement in the conflict. However, Washington has not confirmed whether American forces will join Saudi strikes, leaving the next phase of the military response uncertain.
