At least six passengers were killed and 30 others injured after the Rehman Baba Express derailed near Sher Shah Bridge in Multan early Tuesday, October 13, 2026.
The train was travelling from Karachi to Peshawar when the accident occurred at approximately 5:15am, according to reports. All the coaches came off the tracks, prompting an emergency response from rescue teams and railway authorities.
Rescue workers rushed to the scene and began evacuating passengers from the damaged coaches. Authorities shifted the injured to Nishtar Hospital in Multan for medical treatment, while rescue operations continued at the site.
Officials reported that rescue teams had cleared 13 coaches, while operations continued in another coach. The condition of some injured passengers remained a concern, and authorities awaited further details about the casualties.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif took notice of the incident and directed the relevant authorities to accelerate rescue efforts. He also instructed officials to ensure that injured passengers received immediate and appropriate medical care.
Meanwhile, a passenger claimed that workers had repaired the nuts and bolts of coach number nine near Rohri before the accident. However, authorities have not independently verified the claim or established any connection between the reported repairs and the derailment.
The cause of the accident remains unknown, and further investigation is expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The tragedy has renewed concerns about railway safety and maintenance in Pakistan, where previous derailments have caused significant casualties. Officials are expected to provide additional information as the investigation and rescue operations progress.
