Fans of Crazy Rich Asians have reason to celebrate as HBO brings the hit franchise back with an eight-episode sequel series. The upcoming drama will reunite several original cast members and continue the story following the events of the 2018 romantic comedy.
The series will feature Constance Wu as Rachel Chu, Henry Golding as Nick Young and Ronny Chieng as Eddie Cheng. Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh will also return in a recurring role as Eleanor Young, Nick’s mother.
Original Stars Reunite for the Sequel
The new series draws inspiration from Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novels, which introduced audiences to the extravagant lifestyles and complicated relationships of Singapore’s wealthiest families.
Adele Lim, who co-wrote the original film, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Director Jon M. Chu will also return as an executive producer alongside Kwan, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson.
Lim described the project as a family reunion, explaining that the eight-episode format will allow the creative team to explore more characters and storylines than a single film could accommodate.
HBO and Warner Bros. Television will co-produce the series, which has moved forward after spending around two years in development.
From Romantic Comedy to Television Drama
The original Crazy Rich Asians premiered in 2018 and became a major box-office success. It follows Rachel Chu, an American economics professor who travels to Singapore with her boyfriend, Nick Young, only to discover his family’s extraordinary wealth and social influence.
Rachel’s relationship with Nick faces challenges as she navigates family expectations, elite social circles and the disapproval of his mother.
While the original movie blended romance and comedy, the upcoming television adaptation will take a drama-focused approach. Its longer format will give the writers more room to explore the characters, family relationships and wider world established in the film.
Production Expected to Begin in 2027
HBO has confirmed the series, but it has not announced an official premiere date. Production is expected to begin in 2027.
The returning cast and original creative team offer continuity for viewers who have waited years for the story to continue. However, further casting announcements and plot details remain under wraps.
With familiar faces returning and a longer format planned, the new series will expand the Crazy Rich Asians universe for television while continuing the story that captivated audiences worldwide.
