Norwegian Telecom Giant Explores Divestment Options
Telenor is exploring the sale of its controlling stake in Easypaisa Bank, a move that could mark the Norwegian telecom groupโs complete exit from Pakistan, according to a report published by Bloomberg on Friday.
Sources familiar with the matter said Telenor is working with financial services firm Citigroup to evaluate the potential sale of its 55 percent shareholding in the digital bank. The stake could attract bids worth several hundred million dollars, although discussions remain at an early stage and no final decision has been made.
The development comes months after Telenor completed the sale of its telecommunications operations in Pakistan to the PTCL Group for Rs108 billion, or approximately $385 million. However, Easypaisa, the companyโs digital banking subsidiary, remained outside that transaction and continued operating independently.
According to the report, Telenor plans to invite initial offers from potential buyers within the next few months as it reviews strategic options for its investment.
Easypaisa Maintains Strong Financial Performance
Meanwhile, Easypaisa has continued to post strong financial results, reinforcing its position as one of Pakistanโs leading digital banking platforms.
For the quarter ending March 31, 2026, the bank reported a profit after tax of Rs1.49 billion and earnings per share of Rs2.47. Profit before tax surged to Rs3.66 billion, representing a 4.4-fold increase compared to Rs840 million recorded during the same period last year.
The bankโs robust growth has drawn attention from investors seeking exposure to Pakistanโs rapidly expanding digital payments and fintech sector.
Bloomberg also noted that Chinaโs Ant Group holds the remaining stake in Easypaisa, making it a key stakeholder in any future ownership changes.
Market analysts believe a successful transaction would allow Telenor to simplify its Asian portfolio while unlocking value from one of Pakistanโs most prominent digital financial institutions.
As discussions continue, industry observers will closely watch potential bidders and the impact any ownership transition could have on Pakistanโs growing digital banking landscape.
