ISLAMABAD: Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has regained consciousness and is now stable after suffering a major heart attack during a domestic cricket match, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
The 36-year-old was leading Mohammedan Sporting Club in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League when he experienced severe chest pain and was rushed to a nearby hospital on Monday.
“He is feeling better now. He has spoken to his family and even walked briefly at the hospital,” said club official Tariqul Islam.
Mohammedan’s physiotherapist, Enamul Haque, confirmed that Tamim’s condition is stable, and he may soon be transferred to another medical facility. “We had to act quickly to save his life, and thankfully, we did,” he told AFP.
Hospital medical director Razeeb Hasan revealed that Tamim was in critical condition upon arrival and had to undergo surgery to implant stents due to an artery blockage.
The news has sparked an outpouring of support from the cricketing community. Long-time teammate Shakib Al Hasan urged fans to pray for Tamim’s swift recovery, while Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh sent well wishes, saying, “You’ve faced tough opponents before and come out stronger—this will be no different.”
Tamim, who captained Bangladesh in ODIs, played 391 international matches between 2007 and 2023, scoring over 15,000 runs. He remains the only Bangladeshi cricketer to have centuries in all three formats of the game.
