PCB
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has initiated formal steps to establish the Pakistan Super League (PSL) as a separate entity, with plans to register it as a private limited company.
Chief Commercial Officer Salman Naseer confirmed the move, revealing that the necessary paperwork for the creation of “Pakistan Super League Private Limited” has already been completed. A formal announcement regarding the shift is expected once the current PSL Season 10, which began on April 11, 2025, concludes.
This significant step comes after years of deliberation within the PCB, with discussions on the PSL’s separation dating back to November 2016.
At that time, the PCB’s governing board, under the leadership of then-PSL Chairman Najam Sethi, had initially approved the idea of operating the PSL independently under its own governing body, separate from PCB oversight.
However, the separation plan faced a number of delays over the years. Legal complexities and resistance from the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) created hurdles, along with concerns regarding the roles of PCB officials in a privately-run organization.
Despite these challenges, the idea of an independent PSL has remained a key focus of the PCB, with the goal of enhancing the league’s commercial viability and operational transparency.
Franchise owners, who have long advocated for greater transparency in the league’s financial dealings, have responded to the move with cautious optimism.
The separation is expected to give PSL more autonomy in decision-making, particularly in financial matters, which has been a source of frustration for team owners. They believe that this shift could pave the way for a more structured and transparent operation, ultimately benefitting both the franchises and the league itself.
As the league approaches its tenth season, the move towards autonomy signals a new era for the PSL, one that could reshape its future growth and profitability while addressing the concerns of stakeholders.
The upcoming months are expected to reveal further details on how this transition will be managed and what changes it will bring to the league’s overall functioning.
