Pat Cummins has sparked controversy with recent comments about Indian fans, alleging that they frequently reach out to his home address seeking financial assistance via mail.
Reflecting on his time in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Cummins mentioned in a podcast receiving numerous letters and emails from Indian fans requesting money for surgeries and medical expenses.
Speaking after leading Sunrisers Hyderabad to the 2024 IPL final, where they were defeated by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Cummins recounted experiences of Indian fans reaching out for financial support.
“Some Indian fans find your receipts from a hospital, that can you please pay for surgery or can you send some money over? You got to feel them,” he remarked.
These comments have been taken seriously by the cricket community and supporters in India, with many expressing dissatisfaction and anger on social media, accusing Cummins of insensitivity. Some argued that these requests might stem from genuine need given the socioeconomic challenges faced by some Indian states.
The controversy arises amidst the ongoing 17th edition of the Indian Premier League, which remains immensely popular with millions of fans in India and worldwide.
Cummins’ remarks may have strained his relationship with Indian supporters and overshadowed his on-field achievements in the IPL.
Since leading Australia to victory in the ICC ODI World Cup final last November against the Indian team at the Narendra Modi Stadium, his relationship with Indian fans has been tumultuous at best.
Under Mitchell Marsh’s leadership, Australia will commence their T20I World Cup campaign on June 6 in Barbados against Oman. In the group stage, the Kangaroos will also face off against fierce rivals Namibia, Scotland, and England.
