Azam Khan Ruled Out of T20 Series Against New Zealand Due to Calf Muscle Tear

Pakistan’s wicketkeeper-batter, Azam Khan, finds himself sidelined from the crucial home series against New Zealand, comprising five T20Is, due to a Grade One tear in his right calf muscle, as per the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announcement on Saturday. Following medical advice based on radiology reports, Azam has been recommended a 10-day rest period to facilitate his recovery.

The setback means Azam will miss out on the entirety of the ongoing T20I series against New Zealand, including the final match scheduled for April 27 in Lahore. The injury, classified as a Grade One tear, typically involves minimal damage to individual muscle fibers, resulting in slight strength and motion loss, as described by medical experts.

The discomfort in Azam Khan’s right calf was initially detected during batting practice ahead of the first T20I training session at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Subsequently, he will depart from the Pakistan men’s cricket team and undergo rehabilitation under the close supervision of the PCB medical panel at the National Cricket Academy.

Azam’s absence is a notable setback for the team, given his dual role as a wicketkeeper and a batter, which adds depth and versatility to the squad. His recent performances have showcased his potential as a key contributor to Pakistan’s cricketing success, making his absence keenly felt.

Furthermore, Azam was among the select group of 29 elite cricketers who participated in the pre-season camp at the Pakistan Military Academy in Kakul. The camp, held from March 26 to April 6, aimed to enhance the players’ skills and fitness levels under the guidance of army experts and strategists.

Despite the setback, Azam’s injury underscores the physical demands and risks associated with professional cricket. The PCB’s prompt action in facilitating his rehabilitation reflects its commitment to prioritizing player welfare and ensuring their timely recovery.
