Shoaib Khoso Dismissed as Director General of Pakistan Sports Board

Pakistan Sports Board

Shoaib Khoso, who was appointed Director General of the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) by then Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in April 2023, has been dismissed from his position, according to a recent announcement by the PSB.

In light of his dismissal, IPC Additional Secretary Zahoor Ahmed has been designated to temporarily assume the responsibilities of Director General in addition to his existing duties.

The decision to remove Khoso comes after his tenure lasting less than a year, during which he was expected to serve on a three-year contract basis.

He was appointed to the position in the MP II scale following a detailed review by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the IPC Ministry, who had initially endorsed his appointment after considering several candidates for the job.

Khoso, holding a Master’s Degree in Finance, took over the leadership role with a vision to elevate the standards and performance of sports in Pakistan.

The notification issued regarding his termination does not specify the reasons behind this sudden change in leadership but assures that Shoaib Khoso will receive one month’s advance salary as part of his dismissal package.

This development suggests an abrupt end to what many hoped would be a fruitful tenure, aiming to bring about significant improvements and reforms within the PSB under Khoso’s guidance.

During his brief tenure, Khoso had the challenge of steering the PSB towards greater achievements in international sports arenas. His role was pivotal in shaping policies and initiatives aimed at enhancing the training and competitive edge of Pakistani athletes.

Despite these efforts, the sudden cessation of his role indicates possible shifts in the administrative strategies or satisfaction levels with the current progress under his direction.

The impact of this administrative change extends beyond just a personnel shift but touches upon the broader strategic directions and ambitions of the Pakistan Sports Board.

As Zahoor Ahmed steps into this interim role, he faces the dual challenge of maintaining continuity in ongoing projects while possibly steering the board in a new direction as dictated by the higher sports administrative bodies of Pakistan.

This change also highlights the often-volatile nature of sports administration in the country, where leadership positions can be subject to swift changes influenced by broader governmental or ministerial reviews.

It underscores the challenges faced by sports administrators who must navigate not only the complexities of sports management but also the intricacies of political appointments and expectations.

The sports community, stakeholders, and athletes will be watching closely to see how this transition affects the overall strategy and performance of Pakistan in upcoming international competitions.

The appointment of a new permanent Director General will likely be anticipated with keen interest, as it will signal the future policy direction and reformative measures expected to be undertaken by the PSB.
