SpaceX announced on Tuesday that it will acquire artificial intelligence coding startup Cursor for $60 billion. The all-stock agreement marks one of the technology sector’s biggest AI acquisitions. Meanwhile, SpaceX shares climbed for a third consecutive trading session.
The company’s stock reached $214.29 during early trading. Consequently, its market value surpassed Amazon, making SpaceX the world’s fifth-largest company by market capitalization.
SpaceX Expands Artificial Intelligence Capabilities
Cursor launched in 2022 and operates from San Francisco. The company develops artificial intelligence tools that help businesses generate software code efficiently. Furthermore, Cursor has rapidly gained recognition in the growing AI software industry.
The acquisition follows a strategic partnership announced between both companies in April. That agreement included an option allowing SpaceX to purchase Cursor for $60 billion. Therefore, Tuesday’s announcement finalized the expected transaction.
According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, both companies expect the deal to close during the third quarter. After completion, Cursor will become a wholly owned subsidiary of SpaceX.
Partnership Aims to Build Advanced AI Models
SpaceX believes the acquisition will strengthen its artificial intelligence capabilities. The company plans to combine Cursor’s software expertise with its Colossus AI training supercomputer.
Both companies previously said the partnership would accelerate the development of advanced artificial intelligence models. Moreover, they believe combining engineering expertise with powerful computing infrastructure will improve AI performance.
Industry observers expect the acquisition to strengthen SpaceX’s position in the competitive artificial intelligence market. Additionally, the deal reflects growing investment in AI technologies across leading technology companies. The transaction also highlights increasing competition among firms developing next-generation artificial intelligence systems.
