US Vice-President JD Vance reportedly sought candid assessments from American military commanders about the Iran war, seeking information that differed from the administration’s public messaging.
According to the report, Vance contacted commanders across the Middle East, Europe and Asia throughout the spring and summer. He wanted their personal judgments on the conflict before broader Pentagon assessments combined the information.
The effort reportedly gave Vance a closer view of battlefield conditions and military concerns as the war continued.
Vance Sought Direct Military Assessments
Vance reportedly asked commanders about the war’s objectives, tactics and casualty estimates. He also sought information about Iran’s activities in the Strait of Hormuz.
Furthermore, he asked how Iranian forces were adapting during the conflict.
Vance also wanted detailed information about remaining weapons stocks. In particular, he examined how sending additional weapons to the Middle East could affect US efforts to deter China, Russia and North Korea.
Commanders reportedly raised concerns about declining supplies of Patriot interceptor missiles. Some officials warned that stocks of critical munitions had reached exceptionally low levels.
Private Concerns Differed From Public Picture
The private assessments reportedly raised concerns about the administration’s broader strategy and its chances of success.
However, the information Vance received differed significantly from the picture senior administration officials, including President Donald Trump, presented publicly.
The report said Trump and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth knew about Vance’s conversations with military commanders.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said, “to ensure the president’s team receives all available data points regarding ongoing operations in the Middle East, the secretary has facilitated direct access to combatant commanders for the vice-president and other senior White House leaders.”
Vance Tracked Intelligence and Iran’s Politics
Vance reportedly began seeking detailed briefings within days of the war’s start. He wanted military officers to provide unfiltered views that could help shape his advice to Trump.
Meanwhile, he closely followed daily developments in the conflict. His focus included military operations, Iran’s internal political dynamics and intelligence assessments.
CIA Director John Ratcliffe also reportedly gave Vance direct access to agency analysts.
According to the report, Vance called some analysts at their desks to discuss raw intelligence and information included in morning briefings.
Pentagon Provides Daily Strait of Hormuz Reports
Pentagon officials also said Hegseth instructed the Office of Naval Intelligence to prepare daily reports for Vance about the Strait of Hormuz.
The reports provided details about vessels travelling through the strategic waterway. They included information about each ship’s flag and cargo.
Other senior White House officials now receive the reports as well.
Vance’s reported efforts highlight his attempt to gather information directly from military and intelligence officials while advising Trump on the evolving Iran conflict. The assessments also offered senior officials a more detailed view of military readiness, weapons shortages and the challenges facing US strategy.
