Former Bangladesh cricket captain Shakib Al Hasan’s ancestral home came under attack after he joined a virtual media event featuring former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The incident occurred in Magura town on Wednesday, police said.
According to authorities, attackers smashed windows and hurled petrol bombs at the property. Consequently, a fire broke out on the upper floor of the residence.
Police confirmed the house was unoccupied during the attack. Therefore, no injuries were reported.
Attack Follows Sheikh Hasina’s Virtual Address
The incident took place hours after Shakib participated in an online event organised by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia in New Delhi.
During the virtual address, Sheikh Hasina reiterated her intention to return to Bangladesh in December. She is currently living outside the country after her removal from power in 2024.
Reuters reported that attempts to contact Shakib for comment were unsuccessful.
Former Cricketer Faces Multiple Investigations
Shakib was elected to parliament as an Awami League candidate in January 2024. However, he has remained outside Bangladesh since the student-led uprising that toppled Hasina’s government.
Authorities are also investigating the former cricketer in several cases. These include allegations of murder, embezzlement, fraud and money laundering.
Police continue investigating the attack on the residence. Meanwhile, officials have not announced any arrests in connection with the incident.
