Seven people died after a tourist helicopter crashed in Kenyaโs Samburu County on Wednesday. The aircraft carried six tourists and one pilot.
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority confirmed the crash occurred at 9:13am local time. The helicopter had departed from the Loisaba wildlife reserve.
Aircraft Accident Investigation Department director Fredrick Kabunge confirmed there were no survivors. He said the helicopter was carrying tourists on a scenic flight.
Helicopter Crashes Near Mount Ololokwe
The crash occurred near Mount Ololokwe, north of Kenyaโs capital, Nairobi. Video footage showed thick black smoke rising from the crash site.
Mount Ololokwe stands about 2,000 metres above sea level. The sacred mountain attracts hikers and tourists seeking scenic helicopter flights.
Authorities have not yet identified the nationalities of the six tourists. Officials also have not established what caused the helicopter to crash.
Investigation Underway Into Deadly Crash
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority said investigations were underway. Meanwhile, the Kenya Red Cross joined a multi-agency response operation.
Rescue teams worked to reach the crash site after receiving reports of the accident. However, officials confirmed that everyone aboard had died.
Images released by the Kenya Red Cross showed flames at the crash location. Authorities are expected to examine the wreckage during the investigation.
The incident has raised concerns over aviation safety during tourist flights. Officials will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.
