VPN Registration
The government of Pakistan has launched a registration process for virtual private networks (VPNs) as part of a “one-window” operation facilitated by the telecommunications regulator and the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) website.
This move comes amid widespread and prolonged internet service disruptions across the country, as reported by the Business Recorder.
In its statement, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) explained that the purpose of VPN registration is to support the operations of various sectors, including software companies, call centers, freelancers, and foreign embassies.
The PTA emphasized that this initiative aims to ensure that these activities remain legitimate, secure, and uninterrupted. The registration process is a collaborative effort between the PTA, the Ministry of IT, the PSEB, and the Pakistan Software Houses Association for IT and ITeS ([email protected]).
Since the launch of this initiative, the registration process has been ongoing and is being further refined to make it more efficient.
The PTA also revealed that, since 2020, over 20,000 IP addresses have been registered for VPN use, reflecting the scale and demand for secure internet access within Pakistan.
To maintain secure and continuous online operations, businesses and individual users are now required to register their VPNs. They can do so by visiting the designated registration page at https://ipregistration.pta.gov.pk/.
This development follows the government’s recent confirmation of the installation of a web monitoring system to regulate online content.
Earlier, the Cabinet Division officially informed the National Assembly of the implementation of this system, which is managed by the PTA. The primary objective of this web monitoring system is to monitor and control online content within the country.
The PTA has already started using the web monitoring system to block websites and mobile applications. According to the Cabinet Division, the PTA has blocked 2,369 URLs and 183 mobile applications.
The web monitoring system’s upgrade has enabled the PTA to become self-sufficient in content blocking. The government justifies these measures by stating that the blocked websites were involved in exposing citizens’ personal data, while the blocked applications were linked to the unauthorized disclosure of identification information.
The introduction of both VPN registration and the web monitoring system underscores the government’s efforts to regulate online activities more strictly and maintain control over internet content.
However, these measures have raised concerns among internet users, software companies, and digital rights advocates who worry about potential overreach and the impact on digital privacy and freedom of expression.
