Netflix has been actively promoting games for a little over a year, and it is now stepping up this effort by focusing on cloud computing and opening a new game studio in Southern California.
According to Mike Verdu, vice president of games at Netflix, the company is “seriously considering” a cloud gaming solution to expand the number of games available for play on TVs and computers. On Tuesday, he announced it during the TechCrunch Disrupt 2022 gathering.
He said at the TechCrunch event, “We’re going to approach it the same way we did with mobile, which is start small, be humble, be deliberate, and then build out.”
However, we believe that it is a step that should be taken in order to meet members where they are and on the devices that they use to watch Netflix. Verdu refused to clarify whether Netflix was developing its own controller for this kind of cloud gaming service.
Verdu also revealed that the business plans to open a new studio in Southern California that would be led by Chacko Sonny, the former executive producer of “Overwatch” at Activision Blizzard.
Verdu remarked, “We are putting a team together and looking to him to help reimagine what games can be.
A former executive at Zynga and EA named Marko Lastikka was appointed studio leader of Netflix’s first internal games company in September. The studio will be situated in Helsinki, Finland.
