Meta warns Facebook users that the App Store has been infected with dozens of “malicious mobile applications.”
Researchers discovered hundreds of apps designed to steal Facebook login information and hack into people’s accounts, potentially compromising over a million logins.
While Facebook has discovered over 400 applications in total, only about 50 of them are from the iOS App Store. They have all been removed from the store.
On the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store, legitimate applications were “disguised as picture editors, games, VPN services, business tools, and other utilities to fool clients into installing them,” claims Meta.
The applications prompt users to sign in with Facebook before they may use them once they are installed on an iPhone. When they do, a secret piece of software will record their username and password and utilise them to gain full access to their account.
How can you avoid it?
Users who have downloaded the applications should uninstall them from their phones and update their Facebook login, according to Meta. In addition, the California-based company recommends enabling two-factor authentication and enabling login alerts if someone tries to access your account.
The bogus applications, according to Meta, may have duped over a million customers.
