Iran Star Focuses on Football Amid Crowd Reactions in Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES: Iran international Ramin Rezaeian declined to engage in political discussions following his team’s 2-2 draw against New Zealand in their World Cup opener, responding firmly to questions about crowd reactions during the national anthem.
Before kickoff, sections of the crowd inside the stadium reacted with boos and whistles during Iran’s anthem, while others cheered. The match took place under heightened security in Los Angeles, home to one of the largest Iranian communities outside Iran.
When asked about the reaction from members of the Iranian diaspora, Rezaeian stressed that such matters were internal issues for Iranians.
“If there is any problem between us, it is our business,” he told reporters after the match, adding that outsiders should not interfere in those discussions.
Despite the controversy surrounding the anthem, the experienced defender remained focused on football-related matters during the post-match media session.
Diaspora Protesters Make Presence Felt
Meanwhile, hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the stadium before the match, expressing opposition to the Iranian government. Protesters carried pre-1979 Iranian flags, beat drums and chanted slogans critical of Tehran.
The city, often referred to as “Tehrangeles” because of its large Iranian population, has long served as a hub for Iranian expatriates and their descendants.
As a result, political symbolism remained highly visible throughout the event, both inside and outside the stadium.
Player Refuses Political Debate
Rezaeian, who played a key role in Iran’s performance by contributing a goal and an assist, repeatedly redirected questions toward football.
He praised the Iranian people and emphasized his respect for supporters while declining to comment further on political issues.
“Actually, we are here to answer football questions,” he said, adding that people around the world recognize the qualities of the Iranian people.
The match ended in a 2-2 draw, giving both teams a point in their opening Group stage fixture. Iran will now turn its attention to upcoming World Cup matches as it seeks to advance further in the tournament.
