A 17-year-old girl with an intellectual disability and her newborn baby have died at Sahiwal Teaching Hospital, seven months after she was allegedly gang-raped by her maternal cousin and two unidentified accomplices.
According to sources, the girl belonged to Chak 90/9-L and fainted at home on April 19, 2026. Her sister called a midwife, who discovered that the girl was pregnant and advised the family to seek medical assistance.
Doctors subsequently examined the girl and confirmed that she was 24 weeks pregnant. She later told her sister that her maternal cousin and two unidentified men had allegedly confined her to a locked room and repeatedly raped her over four months.
Police Registered Case After Allegations Emerged
On April 20, Ghala Mandi police registered a case following a complaint from the girl’s brother. Police subsequently arrested two suspects, including the prime suspect, as the investigation began.
The case took a further turn in June when police amended the charges against the accused. On June 24, investigators added Section 376(iii), which concerns rape involving a minor or a person with an intellectual disability.
However, police removed Section 375-A, relating to gang rape, on June 29. The move allegedly raised concerns about whether the suspects were receiving favourable treatment.
DNA Report Links Main Suspect To Case
As part of the investigation, police sent samples for DNA testing. The resulting report confirmed the main suspect’s involvement.
The deaths of the girl and her newborn have brought the case back into focus, although the report did not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
The case highlights the serious allegations raised against the suspects and the importance of investigating them through the legal process. Police had arrested two individuals, while the report did not specify the latest status of the remaining suspects or whether further legal action had been taken following the deaths.
