Qatar said mediators are waiting for Oman and Iran to decide on a bilateral agreement on the Strait of Hormuz. Once this is done, mediators will resume broader talks to end the US-Iran conflict.
The Qatari Foreign Ministry said an agreement between Muscat and Tehran could create better conditions for renewed negotiations involving the United States.
According to the ministryโs spokesperson, resolving the Hormuz issue would make it easier to restart diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran.
Hormuz Agreement Seen as Key Step
The Strait of Hormuz remains central to regional tensions and ongoing diplomatic efforts.
Therefore, mediators believe an agreement between Oman and Iran could help reduce obstacles to broader negotiations. Qatar has continued supporting diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions and preventing further escalation.
However, officials indicated that mediators were awaiting progress on the bilateral Oman-Iran arrangement before advancing wider discussions. The proposed agreement could address issues surrounding navigation and security in the strategic waterway.
Qatar Remains in Contact With Iran
Meanwhile, the Qatari spokesperson said Doha remained in direct contact with Tehran regarding Iranian pilots.
Qatar has also kept its invitation open for an Iranian delegation to visit.
However, Tehran has not yet responded to the invitation, according to the spokesperson.
The ministry also rejected Iranโs request for International Committee of the Red Cross involvement in the pilots issue.
Furthermore, the spokesperson described Tehranโs request as a โmedia ploy.โ
Qatar continues diplomatic contacts with regional parties as mediators seek progress on the Hormuz issue and broader US-Iran negotiations.
